Don’t Grill a Steak, Grill Your Man on Valentine’s Day!

Raise your hand if your partner rocks Valentine’s Day!

Wait a minute, y’all, that looks like a lot of hands up out there…wow, that’s impressive!!

Oh, you were just stretching? So, we don’t need to go cry in a corner because we are the only ones who don’t have the world’s most romantic mates? Whew.

Listen, we are aware of the many ways our hubbies complete us and make our lives better. And we will be sure to tell them all of those ways in their mushy, poetic, just right Hallmark message greeting cards this Thursday. (As long as we have time to go to Hallmark on Wednesday).

But is that really enough? Can’t we do more to celebrate this special day dedicated solely to love?

Let’s just say that we decided to get creative, because when we broached the subject of making this Valentine’s Day special with our hubbies, we were met with a bit less enthusiasm than we had been hoping for. We heard…

“Valentine’s Day? At a restaurant? Isn’t that the night that you can never get a reservation, and then they make me eat off a special menu so I can’t even get the food I actually want?”

“Would we even be able to get a sitter that night? And wouldn’t she want to charge like double? That sounds like it might be expensive. What day is Valentine’s Day again?”

Back off ladies, these special men are all ours! ;)

So, like with everything else in our lives, we have both decided to take matters into our own hands and plan an at-home, totally affordable, hopefully romantic, evening after the kids are in bed!

In order to set the scene, we feel like there must be a good meal. Since we know we’d feel bitter and hostile if we had to do all the work ourselves (and that doesn’t lend itself to romance), we have told our hubbies that they are in charge of what we eat for this special date night. It’s all theirs! Depending on how late they leave the office and how long the line is at the grocery store, we are probably looking at Domino’s Pizza. Hope they don’t forget the garlic knots!

Since we, however, are in charge of dessert, we have been combing the interwebs for all the best recipes. This one left us drooling onto our keyboards, so count on this being served!

Thank you Mix and Match Mama for this fabulous recipe!

Thank you Mix and Match Mama for this fabulous recipe!

But, dinner and dessert didn’t seem like quite enough. I mean we can eat at home in front of the TV with our men any night of the year.

Thanks to our friend Sheri and a long car ride back from the beach, we came up with a way to really spice things up this year! We came up with a game that can be played with our mates that should inspire romance! And no, for the men reading, it is NOT called strip poker.

It is more of a trip down memory lane style game. We thought of questions to answer “Newlywed Game” style that would invite shared conversations about all the reasons why we love each other. We’re writing the questions down in advance and answering at the same time to see how closely our answers match.

Here are some sample questions we will be using:

Where was your first date? This should be an easy one, right? We know they might be dubious about the game, so we’ve got to start off with a simple question to inspire confidence in the whole process!

Favorite Take-out and your mate’s order? Chances are this will be an easy one, too, since we will most likely be eating it as we play!

Best thing your partner cooks? We admit this will be a tough one for our men. It will be a reach for them to say anything other than, “Any meal that doesn’t have us reaching for the fire extinguisher works for us”. It will be fun seeing them try, though!

What was the first trip you took together? Who doesn’t love remembering the good old days of having enough money, time, and energy to travel? (You know, before kids).

What is your dream vacation? Okay, we admit this one could be depressing if you suspect you’re never actually going to be able to get to that beautiful beach in Fiji, but both of us already have dream vacations in mind that are not out of the realm of possibility. This seems like the perfect way to get them on the guys’ radar.

Who is better at handling money?: If our answers match up on this one, we’re immediately putting that person in charge of creating and maintaining the dream vacation fund!

What detail at the wedding did not go as planned? We know there at least one thing that happens on every wedding day that could have made the highlight reel of America’s Funniest Home video, right? Ours are no exception.

What song reminds you of your spouse? We hope they tread lightly here because no wife wants to hear that “Baby Got Back” immediately brings her to mind!

What was the first thing you noticed about your spouse? Was it his sparkling blue eyes or his early 90′s popped collar?

What one item of clothing would you like your mate to eliminate from their wardrobe? Oh dear, this could get interesting. Needless to say, our hubbies have many items to choose from in our closets! And actually, we can think of quite a few things from their closets, as well! (Nobody needs a road cone orange t-shirt. Just sayin’.)

What is the best way you have been influenced/changed by being together? This will have us ending on a high note for sure. Our guys really have brought the best out in us…if you think we’re crazy now, you should have seen what we were like before!

Good Luck, Guys

Have you done this sort of question game with your partner? What other questions would *you* add to our list?

Don’t Grill a Steak, Grill Your Man on Valentine’s Day! — 69 Comments

  1. No questions like this at our house. He’s best with money. Hands down. We don’t eat out. And we talk about our dream vacay all the time. Plus he’s way more romantic than me and this seems like work! ;-) Maybe the day will pass over our house and no one will notice.

I hope you both have a great Valentines day!

  2. My hubs is the worst when it comes to vday! I told him that I made reservations at a restaurant for Thursday, his response was…what’s Thursday?! Ugh.

These should make for some interesting over dinner conversation though. Thank you! (I’m pretty sure that without this we would have had extensive conversations on our children :) )

    • Exactly,Nellie! We *always* end up talking about the kids when we go out or have alone time. We purposefully wanted to do questions that had us focusing on each other and not the kids!!

(and one of our husbands didn’t know what Thursday was either…shocker)

  3. Valentine’s is pretty low-key around here. This is a fun idea for a low-stress night in – I have never done one of these games before. You picked some great questions; I love trips down memory lane. :)

    • We usually go so low-key that we barely acknowledge the holiday, so this is a step up for us!! (but hopefully a fun one!)

  4. Sweet questions! I believe this Valentine’s Day my husband will be going to see Die Hard while I probably hang out at home, which is perfectly fine with me after our first disastrous Valentine’s Day date (which I will be posting on Thursday!)

    • It’s a good thing for us that our husbands aren’t fast runners. We can definitely talk faster than they can run.

  5. The first year we were married, my husband brought home a rose and laid on the table so I could see it when I woke up in the morning on Valentines day. (He’s a musician and often comes back after I’m already asleep.)

It completely made my day. Just a little thing, but it was enough. I told all my buds at work, I smiled all day long, I hurried home that evening to thank him for the sweet gift. He looked at me blankly, then answered. Oh that? Some girl gave that to me at work last night. I just left it on the table.

Grrr! He still doesn’t get why that made me so sad!

    • I honestly cannot stop laughing. OMG that is SUCH the perfect marriage & Valentine’s story. Oh, girl!! Hahahahahaha. This may be one of my favorite funny Valentine’s stories ever!! :)

  6. My husband has never taken me out on Valentine’s Day! He hates the hype surrounding the whole holiday. Fortunately, he will stop at the grocery store and buy me flowers. ;) I like the idea of making him in charge of dinner!!

Thanks for putting my linky link in your post! You rock!

  7. Some of those questions could lead to “Danger, Will Robinson!” pretty fast! LOL :) I think, though, it’s a great idea to take a trip down memory lane, especially on Valentine’s Day! :) I am thinking the other question, if you know it will be handled right, is “What was your first impression of me and why?” I know that my first impression of my hubby couldn’t have been further from who he is (I saw him trying to dunk a basketball in those short 80s shorts and totally failing…and then a week or so later, he tried to take my head off with a volleyball and I was told his name is Bob…and it’s Aaron.), so I almost didn’t go out with him…until some friends of mine who knew him better talked me into it! LOL Seriously, our meeting is so beyond crazy. I should blog about it. :) Maybe I will! Anyway, I digress! Still a great idea, ladies! I hope you get to enjoy a great meal…even if it is Domino’s! :)

    • YES!! You should totally blog about your meeting story!! I think the first impression question is fantastic!! I’m adding that one on Thursday!!

      • LOL I am so going to blog about it now! :) I’ll even dedicate the inspiration of the blog post to you gals!

I feel all kinds of special now that you’re using my question, too! :) Makes me want to strut like a peacock! LOL ;) You’ll have to let us all know how that Q&A session goes for sure! You know, because inquiring minds want to know! :D

  8. I remember when I got engaged my mother bought us a book of questions (In hindsight I guess she thought our engagement was a bit premature and we needed to get to know each other better. I never listen.) that had a couple of these on the list. I think we’ll give it another go, because obviously we didn’t learn much. Again, I never listen. Visiting from SITS. Again. 9. I’m not sure my husband will be up to playing this game. But we just celebrated our 2nd anniversary today and he made it pretty special for me, I don’t think I will complain if he doesn’t do much after only two days :) Some times he does the sweetest things regardless of what day it is.

I hope your game works and you have a fabulous valentines day ;)

    • You had the sweetest post about your husband, too! He sounds absolutely wonderful! You two are so cute together!! Happy Valentine’s Day and Happy Anniversary!! :)

  10. I LOVE the questions game. Any questions game. I am totally doing this. Leo is going to love this one! I can’t wait. Now to find time to ask him and record his answers. :)

    • We love all games!! I think this one will be fun. We tried to leave out any questions that could lead to disharmony like, “What day and year were we married?” You’d think that would be a gimme…but it’s better not to chance it!

    • I guess he is!!!! Who wouldn’t be thrilled??!! I want you to plan my next Valentine’s Day. You’re way better than me!!

  11. Question contribution – What is the one thing your spouse does that makes you feel the most loved? :) (It’s amazing how many couples don’t know their spouses answer to this question.)

    • I absolutely, positively LOVE LOVE LOVE that question. It is genius. I actually think my husband would be shocked by my answer…and I just might be hearing he answer. Fantastic!!!

  12. Hahah awesome! This sounds like a fantastic game, and I can’t wait to hear the recap! :)

Maybe you should add favorite piece of clothing they wear. You know….so you can change and get in the mood. Unless he says he loves it when you wear your Snuggie. Then he might deserve to sleep on the couch….

    • Hahahahahaha!! That’s not a bad idea, Tara! If we are going to go after the items we don’t like in the closet, it would be nice to mention the ones we do like, too!! (birthday suit doesn’t count…I’ll have to make that clear from the get-go)

  13. Lucky for me, I’ll be working this year. It wouldn’t matter much though, it’s just another day around these parks. I do manage to squeeze dinner out of him though:)

  14. My girlfriends actually did this for my bridal shower way back in the day. They video taped my husband answering these kind of questions and then they asked me what I thought his answers would be before they played them back to the guests. It was so much fun!

    • That is the cutest shower idea EVER. I love that they even video taped it and didn’t just have him write down the answers. You have good girlfriends!!

  15. Yeah see I would suck at this, my husband has a way better memory than I do. As in he can remember the first time he saw me in high school, when he was dating what would become his first wife… yeah I would be so screwed lol.

    • You absolutely cannot play this game then!! We would never advocate setting yourself up to lose any game! (we are type A like that). We are absolutely positive we won’t have this problem (mostly because we wrote and picked the questions, so we already know all the answers!! CAGEY!)

    • My husband has an aversion to planning in general, including romantic dates!! Hope you have a great Valentine’s too!!

  16. Sorry for the obviously dumb question, but what is a bloghop? Is it the same as a link up? I mean, I clicked the thing that says ‘what is a blog hop’ but I still don’t get it. It looks like a link up, but there aren’t any ‘rules’ or topic? Or is it something else entirely?

    • Same thing as a link-up, except it takes place on multiple blogs! :) We joined up the blog hop that Lemon Droppie was hosting! :)

  17. This is a cute list… not all apply to me, since Lawn Boy and I are not married, but this is something we could totally do… over the phone, since we live 40 minutes away and both have our children for Valentine’s Day and its a school night, we won’t be seeing each other… which sort of falls in line with my feeling that it’s a stupid holiday, but heck, at least this year I have someone to celebrate with… sort of! :-)

    • Y’all should definitely play over the phone! :) And I am certain you can add some extra ones that totally apply to both of you! :)

  18. Before JDaniel we would go out to dinner the day before Valentine’s Day. Now I just make spaghetti and we have ice cream sundaes. My guys are taking me to a glow in the dark puppet show and lunch on Saturday. The show is more for JDaniel and the lunch is mostly for me.

    • That sounds like a super fun Valentine’s Day plan! :) And the glow in the dark puppet show should certainly be exciting! :)

  19. Yeah…I am SO with you on the every thing in this post…SO funny and so true!! I picture you girls doing the dinner thing with your hubs NOT in front of the tv which is very very impressive. ;) Good luck with that! lol

  20. I asked my hubs the song question, and he said, “Pumped Up Kicks,” he knows me so well! He always makes me laugh, even if he’s not the most romantic.

  21. {Melinda} We’re so not good about holidays … anniversary, Christmas, etc. I think it feels like too much pressure. It means more to both of us to do something simple together or to do something special on a day that doesn’t say we “have” to.

Although we did go to a Valentine’s Night event at our church a few years back and we won the Newlywed Game! :)

    • I think that is a fantastic attitude Melinda, and I actually totally agree with you…the random, casual just being together times are definitely the best! :)
And clearly, y’all don’t need this game since you are obviously already the champions! :)

  22. Good idea. My husband and I usually go out to lunch when the kids are in school so that’s when we have our alone time and talk. Mostly about how good the food is and how nice it is not to have to cut up someone else’s food before we eat our own first.

I would be happy with chocolate on Valentine’s Day though. Mmmm.

    • Oh my Gosh, Amber, we were totally saying on our girls’ beach weekend that we should do more lunches with our hubbies! Seems like just as you said…a perfect chance to catch up! :)

  23. Those are great questions! I love the idea of just relaxing at home instead of being rushed through an over-priced dinner at a crowded restaurant. My husband has hated questions ever since I used to quiz him as I read Cosmo – LOL! Happy Valentine’s Day!

    • Ha, ha, ha! When we were coming up with the questions we totally referred to all those Cosmo quizzes…that is awesome! :)

  24. We played this game at a valentine couples party and it was a huge hit! Wish I could report we were the winners but the FIRST question was just way too hard for my husband. I mean should he really know our wedding date including year? Hmmmm…
We had lots of laughs, my pinterest inspired decorations rocked and the chef was amazing! Thanks for helping with the questions!

    • So glad you were the inspiration for us Sheri! :) It was really a lot of fun to “grill” our hubbies with these questions!
Am still laughing about your hubby and the wedding date!
