Would You Rather: Eat Or Drink Your Calories?

It is no secret by now that we are doing Weight Watchers this summer…or technically, since it is a lifestyle, not a diet, we are doing it forever.

The jury is still out on that one, thank you very much.

And when I say we are doing it, I really mean Lisa.

I just checked my food journal (i.e. the spiral notebook I got from the Target dollar bin), and the last day I wrote down my points was June 21st. So, you know, I am obviously taking it really seriously.Ashley's Food Diary

Just the other day, Lisa sent me an email, which said that for the first time since we started Weight Watchers she was going to use her extra points for the week because they were headed out to celebrate her hubby’s birthday.

I wrote back, “Good for you! They give you those points for a reason…so you can use them when you need them. Like yesterday, I needed mine and used all of them. Of course, it probably doesn’t help that I also used all of them all the day before that, too.”

See, my biggest problem is that I enjoy eating. It is a weakness, really. Nighttime comes, and I am all about some snacks. But, I am trying, y’all. Really, I am.

Trying to squeeze into my bathing suit.

Trying to button my shorts.

Trying to resist the pound bag of M&Ms staring at me from the pantry.

The only thing I have going for me these days is that I can resist the temptation to chase my Sno Caps with a large glass of wine. See, apparently, alcohol can really kill your diet. All those extra calories and what not. And probably the fact that after a few glasses, you forget you are on a diet to begin with!

So, here is my question for all of you Dose Peeps today.

Let’s say you have 500 extra calories for the day…

Would you rather eat them or drink them?

Cocktail or King Sized Snickers?

Beer or Ice Cream?

Wine or Cheesecake?

  1. Food for sure. I am like you. I love food. I can do without the alcohol if that’s the choice.

    I know this lifestyle adjustment is tough, but hang in there. Weight Watchers is the real deal. It really does work and teach you a healthy lifestyle modification as opposed to temporary easily reversible gains from popular fads.

    I do find though that if I have a few glasses of wine then I get hungry so I eat and then another glass ….

    So I don’t drink during the week, eat lots of small meals and drink buckets of water – and walk my Coco dog twice a day.

    I’m a curvy woman and love it so as long as I feel healthy and don’t scoff cake every day then I’m good.

    I love growing things so there are tubs of herbs and salad greens for me to add to my food.

    My best friend sent me flowers and a HUGE box of chocs for my birthday last Friday. I had to ask her to take them into her room and hold them hostage as I was making myself sick eating them!

  3. You girls are tricky!!! I would think it depends on my day. Somedays I absolutely NEED to drink those extra calories or there’s no telling what I may do…who am I kidding? That happens everyday – DRINK!! ha ha ha

  4. Dessert. Every. Single. Time. I’m not a big wine or beer gal, and although I enjoy the occasional cocktail, especially on biz trips, I would much rather have dessert. We almost always have ice cream in the freezer and dessert is a daily occurence in our house. It’s a sweet reward after a long day, especially during marathon training. Extra miles = extra calories = extra scoop!

    • See, you can justify all your dessert eating with your awesome running…me, on the other hand, harder to pull off! 😉

  5. For me, it’s no competition – I want to eat my calories. I am a snacker, too – so for me, that extra snack in the evening when I am watching TV or a movie is a big treat.

  6. oh man when i read the title of this post i thought i’d be having to choose between food or gatorade or some other sugary drink, which would have been a no brainer. this is HARD y’all. but… my loyalties still lie with food. however, sometimes that glass of wine manages to work all kinds of wonders that a cupcake can’t.

    • We didn’t want to make it a gimme, so we had to add to alcohol to the equation! Glad we made you think about it! 😉

  7. Ooh, tough call…depends on the day (and of course, what state I’m in….i.e. when I’m not pregnant!) There are days where I just want to unwind with a nice glass of wine. But I’m also such a dessert fiend!

    • Right now, you can be full blown dessert mode, but when the baby actually comes wine will be your friend! 😉

  8. In this scenario I would definitely choose the wine. I can usually resist sweets unless it involves caramel or an impulse buy of Rolos at the grocery store checkout. Now if you had made me choose between deep dish green olive pizza and wine, that would be a tough one.

  9. Oh my gosh. This is like the Sophie’s choice of calories! Can I split them? 250 on wine and 250 on tortilla chips? And they go so well together!

  10. Hmmm…I do love a good Margarita but I love deep dish cheese pizza more and chocolate chip cookies and Pralines and Cream ice cream and chocolate cake so yep…I’d rather eat my calories. Btw, I could never do Weight Watchers. I was like you, Ashley. I’d keep track for a few days and then try and figure it out in my head. I cracked up with the extra points two days in a row. :)

Or Rather a frozen twix (which has been the death of me this summer LOL) I don’t drink alcohol but I love me a good fruity frozen drink that can have tons of calories in itself. I am terrible at weekend eating myself it is NO secret, but if I had 500 cals…food food and more food. I can swig water with my favorite snack LOL

  12. This is an easy one for me since I don’t drink alcohol. However, if you changed the drink to a shake, smoothie or slushy…Then we’d have a toss up. Overall, though, I’d much rather eat the chocolate or the cheesecake, so it isn’t much of a choice. :) Food would win out just about every time. ‘Tis true.

  13. Oh, this is a tough one….but I am going to need to go with drinking my extra points! With a 4 year old and a 8 month old, that glass of wine or 3 in the evening is a must. And on a warm Saturday afternoon on the patio a cold beer is a must….and a Sunday morning brunch wouldn’t be complete without that Bloody Mary or Mimosa…
    I think I just used up all my points thinking about it…

    • I do love a mimosa! And yeah, you have your hands full-down so a glass of wine at night to relax is completely deserved! :)

  14. My answer is going to really, really surprise me..but I say drink my calories. This surprises me because I really, really like to eat. However, I tend to eat fairly healthily and without a lot of calories. My guilty pleasures are usually medium or large iced lattes with extra caramel syrup and extra whipped cream. So if I could eat well all day to get a 500 calorie beverage as a reward, I’d be very happy.

  15. Drink them! The only thing that gets me out of bed in the morning is my coffee (sorry hubbs and kids) and the only thing that gets me through bedtime is the promise of a glass of wine, or a bottle if it’s been one of “those days”. But you’re right, after a glass or two I need a little nibble. But oh well, that’s what Mondays are for right…starting over again!

  16. VERY TOUGH decision. I LOVE food, but I LOVE to drink. Drinking makes me want to eat. eating makes me want to drink. These days though, if I had to choose, I’d rather drink. I need the relaxation factor!

  17. I don’t drink alcohol due to medication, so I thought this would be an easy choice. Eat my calories. But, if my drink were a smoothie, I’d rather drink my calories. Planet Smoothie is within “calling” distance and when I get the “calling” for a smoothie, I get in the car and it drives to Planet Smoothie. I’ve been known to have a smoothie for lunch and then talk hubby into getting one for dinner. Yum!

  18. Loved the comment about “Sophie’s Choice” for this one! LOL Most of the time I would rather drink my calories since I am not much of a snacker anymore. I quit buying any type of snack to have in the house unless it is healthy, so of course, that leaves wine! But….it does depend on the day. Some days I just want me some chocolate! (But dark chocolate and red wine make a great combo!)

    • I feel like I would be 100% better off if I stopped buying snacks to have in our home…but then I might also be 100% less friendly! 😉

  19. I’m a Southern girl, we are all about EATING good food, not frilly shakes :-) I can drink water all day long, but I can’t eat “just” salads. I need some good stuff! (I probably need to check my clogged arteries about now, too!)

  20. Finally! An easy one!! As long as I can have a glass of cold water (no calories) then I would prefer to eat my calories. crunchy ones; like nachos, or chips and dip, or some pretzels, or … DARN IT! Now I’m hungry!!

  21. Eating never once gave me a headache, dry mouth, or was responsible for embarrassing myself I’m front of people so I’ll choose food, glorious food! My kick right now is Ben and Jerry’s Phish Food fro yo. But weight watchers, it’s fro yo, yo! Food seems like the obvious natural choice but when in doubt, blindfold yourself and hold up a nacho supreme or a gin and tonic to your nose and see which one you prefer. Mmmm, nachos.

  22. Honestly? I love me my food, but I’d go with drink.

    Chai tea lattes for everyone! Iced coffee? Sure! Frappucinos? Yup. Milkshakes? Go for them! See – there you go … smoothies, too! All about the drinkin. And that’s BEFORE I add alcohol.

  23. I struggle with my weight nonstop! I use food as a way to treat myself and I know that I am letting myself down.

    I would like the chocolate, bread and cheese or ice cream over wine or beer. The drink that is a real weakness is my fancy giant coffee. That keeps me far and poor :)

  24. I would have to say I’d rather eat them… since I really don’t like alcohol. But then again, I’m a super picky eater and I eat more for survival than for enjoyment. Now, if my drink of choice was a double chocolate chip frap from Starbucks, then I’d have to go with drinking them. That stuff is HEAVEN!!!

  25. I actually drink my calories because I barely eat. I stop at happy hour at sonics and will get a rt 40 (think that’s what its called) and drink that for my dinner. I gotta do better.

  26. Oh I’d definitely drink the extra calories. To be honest, I don’t know that I’d be able to choose, but if I HAD to- a glass of prosecco will win every time! My sister did weight watchers to prep for her wedding and on top of that, cut out ALL carbs. When she came to visit me (while I was very pregnant) I was amazed at the discipline to follow the diet. Discipline I just don’t have!

    • Clearly, I don’t have the discipline either Ashley, which is reflected in the food journal photo! 😉 Cutting out ALL carbs would be like being punished!

  27. I would rather eat my calories. I was on Weight Watcher for about 4 months. It worked… I lost 15 pounds but it seemed like I was always hungry. Pool night with the girls was always a killer! I’d drink up my bonus points in beer in one night!!

    • I hear you Jeanne! I definitely still find myself hungry every day…am trying to learn to live with it! 😉

  28. I’m not a big drinker so I’d say I’d rather eat them over a nice Sara Lee Cheese crumb cake…yum!!! Only 290 calories and I can have coffee with that.

  29. Give me food! Last night I ate an entire Tostino’s pizza by myself. Then my stomach felt like crap. But my mouth was super happy! 😛 Can we say binge!

  30. I signed up for WW yesterday!!! I will definitely be using my extra points for social reasons- so drinks or apps most likely. I love eating!

  31. OMG…you are both so evil…what a tough question….Could I switch each day? While I LOVE food and would die without nachos, pizza, cheesecake, key lime pie, brownies…

  32. I’ll say drinking. But we are in the middle of a remodel. Five of us — along with 2 cats and a lab are living in 700 sq. feet.

  33. I would DRINK them – no questions asked. I love wine, beer, sweetened coffee (iced/hot), slushies – you name it … 😉

  34. I would immediately schedule a menage a trois with Ben and Jerry —

    those delectable ice cream kings, and dive into a contained of New York Super Fudge Chunk. Bliss. Bliss. Bliiiiiiiiisssss.

  35. It would be really hard for me to give up that glass of wine, because I really like my wine, but I really, REALLY like my chocolate. And my cake. And cookies. And my ice cream. Ummmm… yep… I’ll take the food!

  36. Crap crap crap! Why can’t I just choose both?! What if I really do split them evenly?! And somedays it varies. Like, am I out at a restaurant or is it just when I’m at home? And is this forever-as in, I can’t change my decision day to day? If it’s forever, I take wine. If I’m allowed to change my mind day to day, I choose popcorn. Umm I mean I choose snacks.

    • You can change your mind for sure! But, I like the way you think about these questions…might need to start consulting you before asking them! :)

  37. It looks like I’m an outlier here…I’d go with wine, hands down. If I’m REALLY working hard at losing weight then my sweet tooth is usually pretty well satisfied with things like fresh fruit (hello pineapple and watermelon!). So the extra calories would definitely go to a couple glasses of wine…mostly because I know I’d never get to 500 calories! I can barely finish one glass without passing out these days, so that would leave me a couple hundred extra calories for the next day!

  38. Oh I just LOVE that diary Ashley!! It CRACKS me UP!!!!! Oh how I just adore you!!! Bless your sweet heart with all this crazy weight watchers stuff… I do hear it’s one of the best of them, but oh how hard!!! ESPECIALLY in the summer!!
    Now it really depends on the day with drinking or eating. Give me my Malibu Coconut rum and diet coke X 5 on a day that screams it- or give me a couple ten packs of twix and snickers to nibble down while watching stupid tv.

    Both equally satisfying!! I often do BOTH. 😉

  39. This is a very hard question, and it’s the source of my current middle-age battle.

    I think I drink a lot of my extra calories. A craft beer while out. A craft beer after the kids go to bed.

    A latte during the day…even though it is supposed to be skinny. I”m not really a dessert girl unless it’s something I really can’t pass up like coconut cake, keylime pie, banana pudding, etc…

    But, I like food…like a whole plate of spaghetti. It’s a true struggle.

    I’m also a travel and leisure writer…..and I do a lot of leisure that involves food.

    • I would definitely imagine that with your job it is really tricky to stay away from high caloric snacks and drinks! :)

  40. I have no choice but eating here because obviously I can’t drink. I think I would probably choose eating even if I could because I’d much rather have the m&ms and the pizzas! 😀
