A Good Friend Always Has You Covered

Have you ever had so much on your to-do list that the only response you could muster was to throw caution (and your agenda) to the wind and just goof off?

If you answered “No”, you are a responsible adult who obviously has her priorities in order. If you answered “Yes, of course!” you are the Dose Girls.

It happened to me last week. Even though Lucy was in camp for the day and Bobby was sweating it out at a long football practice, I felt overwhelmed and more than just a little bit irritated at all the tasks on my plate. I was completely out of sorts. I did the only thing I knew to do…I called Ashley.

Lisa: I have three blog posts to write and 75 back-to-school things to do. I just feel cranky and annoyed.

Ashley: I’m busy, too. I’m so glad my girls are at camp. I’m psyched to be able to get some work done today!

Lisa: Hey, since all the kids are occupied, let’s blow off all of our work and go see a movie!

Ashley: That would be fun, but I’ve just got way too much to do. Maybe next week?

Now, those of you who haven’t met Ashley, need to know this one super fun fact about her: As long as her kids are in a decent babysitting/camp/childcare situation, you can talk her into almost anything. Obviously not “sing or dance in public” levels of anything, but most other activities are entirely within your grasp if you know how to play your cards right. Luckily, I have had a lot of experience with this, so I knew exactly what to do.

Lisa: Oh, too bad. I just bought 2 boxes of the movie theater sized M&Ms. They are in my pantry right now.

Ashley: Plain or peanut?

Lisa: One of each, obviously.

Ashley: Huh…I was craving some delicious candy. Well…I don’t even know what’s playing at the movies.

Super fun fact about Ashley #2: She is totally picky about what she sees at the movies. I am happy to watch just about anything that gives me an excuse to sit in a dark theater while gulping 40 ounces of Diet Coke. Ashley is much more discerning. She wants funny, but not TOO funny. She hates anything that seems too “action-y” unless Ben Affleck is in it. Also, she won’t come within 10 theater lengths of a period costume drama.

Lisa (in extremely casual voice): Hmmm…I think I saw that Chef is playing right by your house. I think Robert Downey, Jr. is in that one. But you’re right, next week would probably be better. I sure hope that movie doesn’t leave the theater before then. I’m sure it will be fine.

Super fun fact about Ashley #3: She *LOVES* Robert Downey, Jr. and doesn’t like to jeopardize her exposure to him.

Ashley: I don’t think we should risk it. You shove those M&Ms in your purse. I’ll pick you up in 15 minutes.

At the end of the day, what are friends for if not to subtly manipulate you into procrastination when they are cranky and need a break from chores?

When we arrived at the movie, we stopped in the restroom before heading to our seats.

Lisa: ACK! Nooooooo!! Not now! No WONDER I’ve been so crabby the last few days. I lost track of the month! GAH! I can’t believe this. I don’t have anything with me at all. This is a disaster! I’m going to have to go home now and we’ve already paid for our tickets! *sob*

Ashley (passing a Stayfree® under the stall): Here you go. Crisis averted.

Lisa: OMG…it even has WINGS! Wings are like the Cadillac of maxi pads. You are the BEST!

Ashley: No problem. I’ll meet you out in the lobby. I’m headed to the concession stand. This situation definitely calls for more chocolate.

Nothing is more comforting than a friend who is easily lured into playing hooky, especially if that friend is always prepared to save the day with an ample supply of chocolate and winged maxi pads. If you find someone like that, hold on to her and never let her go.

For the record, Chef is the perfect movie to see when you are hormonal and hungry. And we did *eventually* do everything on our to-do lists (more or less).

A Good Friend Always Has You Covered — 95 Comments

  1. I totally knew it was written over the summer from the first line, but trust me I have a few posts I wrote before the craziness of back to school started that I have scheduled soon, too. So trust me, I get it and it helped to be able to write and schedule in advance here, too. 🙂

  2. When I need a little comfort or a little girl time, we get together to make a delicious meal and just talk. It makes me smile just thinking about it 🙂

  3. Clearly I need to re-evaluate my friendships – they always tell me to be responsible and not procrastinate, but when I procrast0bake, they invite themselves over to lecture me on not procrastinating! Waaaattttt????
    Could y’all use a 3rd Wanna-be Dose Gal tagging along? 🙂

  4. I like your procrastinaton list. Also, I assume movie theater size m&m’s are big but Ashley still bought more? I guess if its diet coke you can drink as much as you want, right? Its just flavor, no calories. Like root beer being all natural (roots are natural).

  5. Oh me and my friends burn up the telephone line (since we live in 3 different states) and solve everything in the world or plot how to take over…but you did not hear that from me! 0:-)

  6. I love, love, loved the movie Chef! I want to see it again to catch all the subtle things I missed the first time. I’ll follow your lead and bring chocolate with me but Flo and I have had an amicable parting of ways.

  7. I had no idea a blog post about feminine hygiene products could be so entertaining! Well played, you two… 🙂 And I have been SO stressed and frazzled and disorganized these past few weeks. I totally wish I could go play hooky and eat candy at the movies with you ladies. 😀

  8. When I need comfort my friends are always there to talk to me on the phone or send me a happy email and some chocolate and flowers.

  9. I think that was the best intro to a maxi pad plug ever. And now I’m craving M&Ms.
My friends know that the best thing for me is a good talk and a glass of wine. Or if wine isn’t an option, we usually go for a walk.

  10. I swear everytime you post these conversations, I picture me RIGHT there with you!!! I would bet LOTS of money (I surely don’t have- but I would even borrow it to bet) that we would totally be BFFX3 if I lived near you gals.

    Awkward silence.

  11. My husband is my best friend so when I need a little comfort he takes me out for dinner and/or ice cream. With two toddlers, I have been eating a lot of ice cream lately!!

  12. Oh my sister always comforts me…with some sister shopping time! We love to just go and look for the good deals! We always have so much fun!

  13. My friends don’t really do anything for me like you are suggesting. I just don’t have relationships like this with my friends. Now, my hubby is a different story. He often says that he feels like he is married to a pregnant woman once a month with all my cravings! LOL! But he takes care of me and fulfills my needs in any way he can with goodies from my fav restaurants! LOL

  14. When girlfriend comfort is needed it’s always great to go out to dinner with some girlfriends, just to get dressed and get out of whatever “funk” you’re in is usually a great remedy. If the kind of comfort needed is the “stay at home in jammies” with your girlfriends type, then I always like to have a few come over and plug in a great movie, and of course some yummy snacks or food is a must have. 🙂

Thanks so much for having this giveaway!
